Notes:

  All countries

Road vehicle-kilometers for Mexico include federal and state  roads only. U.S. and Canadian data include all roads, (both federal and local).

  Canada

Road, total: The total for the years 2004 – 2009 does not include bus data.

Road, all data except bus: The number of total road vehicle kilometers for 1995 is an estimate. See Technical notes for explanation.

Bus: 1990 – 1999 bus data are from a sample of Canadian companies engaged in scheduled intercity bus, urban transit, school bus and charter and other types of bus service from Statistics Canada’s annual Survey of the Passenger Bus and Urban Transit Industry.

Transit: Although vehicle kilometers for transit rail are nonexistent, vehicle kilometers for local motor bus are included under road, buses.

  Mexico

Air: Data were estimated based on operations number of taking off of commercial aircrafts in national and international flights. As well as the average distance traveled by the national transport companies.

Road: Data were estimated based on the federal length of the national appraised net road and the average daily transit registered during each year in the federal appraised net road (federal toll and state free-toll). It should be noted that in 2014 the volumetric length represents 38.5 % of the principal highway system. Until 2003, the data was recorded at the level of total road transport, without breakdowns of personal vehicles, buses and commercial freight vehicles.

  United States

The revised numbers are revised from original source. Air data includes air carriers and general aviation for 1990-97. Road data for 1990-2006 use the categories passenger car and light truck. Road data for 2007-09 are categorized differently under a new methodology which is not comparable to that of previous years. For 2007-09, FHWA has changed the Passenger car category to Light-duty Vehicles, short wheel base, which includes passenger cars, light trucks, vans, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) with a wheel base equal to or less than 121 inches. For 2007-09, FHWA has changed the Light truck category to the new category Light duty vehicle, long wheel base, which includes large passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs with a wheel base longer than 121 inches. Data for Bus, Paratransit, and Other are not continuous from 2006 to 2007. Data for other modes and national aggregates are continuous from 2006 to 2007. Transit and Transit rail data for 1990 and 1995 are not comparable to subsequent data due to the change of source. 1 kilometer = approximately 0.621371 miles.
